Development
Week 9th
- More
than 2cm long, like the size of a grape
- Starting
to look more human
- The
embryonic tail is completely gone
- The eyes
are fully formed, but the eyelids are fused shut and won’t open until 27
weeks
- Tiny
teeth are beginning to form inside your baby’s gums
- Baby’s
heart finishes dividing into four chambers, and the valves start to form
- You may
be able to hear your baby’s rapid heartbeat
- Baby’s
external sex organs are there but won’t be distinguishable
|
Week 10th
- Your
little embryo has now become a fetus
- Just
over 3cm long from head to bottom
- The
tissues and organs in your baby’s body will rapidly grow and mature
- Baby is
swallowing fluid and kicking up a storm
- Vital
organs, including kidneys, intestines, brain and liver, are in place and
starting to function
- The
outline of baby’s spine is clearly visible through translucent skin
- Spinal
nerves are beginning to stretch out from the spinal cord
- Baby’s
head measures half the length of her body
- Her
forehead temporarily bulges with her developing brain
- Tiny
nails forming on fingers and toes
-
Peach-fuzz hair beginning to grow on tender skin
- Baby’s
limbs can bend now
- Her
hands are flexed at the wrist and meet over her heart
- Baby’s
feet may be long enough to meet in front of her body
|
Week 11th
- Just
over 4cm long, about the size of a fig
- Baby is
now almost fully formed
- Baby’s
hands will soon open and close into fists
- Tiny
tooth buds are beginning to appear under the gums
- Some of
his bones are beginning to harden
- He is already
busy kicking and stretching
- You
won’t feel the acrobatics for a while yet
|
Week 12th
- From
crown to rump, your baby is just over 5cm long, about the size of a lime
- She
weighs 14g
- Baby’s
fingers will soon begin to open and close
- Her
mouth will make suckling movements
- Toes
will curl, and eye muscles will clench
- Nerve
cells are multiplying rapidly
-
Synapses, which are used to send messages around the body, are forming
furiously in your baby’s brain
- The
intestines, which have grown so fast that they protrude into the umbilical
cord, will start to move into the abdominal cavity, and the kidneys will
begin excreting urine into your baby’s bladder
- Baby’s
face looks unquestionably human: her eyes have moved from the sides to the
front of her head, and her ears are right where they should be
