3.0 – Month Three (Week 9-12th)

3.1            Checklist
1.     Create ways to compensate for forgetfulness.

2.     Make a sleep a priority; set a new early bedtime and stick to it.



3.2            Baby Development

Week 9th
- More than 2cm long, like the size of a grape
- Starting to look more human
- The embryonic tail is completely gone
- The eyes are fully formed, but the eyelids are fused shut and won’t open until 27 weeks
- Tiny teeth are beginning to form inside your baby’s gums
- Baby’s heart finishes dividing into four chambers, and the valves start to form
- You may be able to hear your baby’s rapid heartbeat
- Baby’s external sex organs are there but won’t be distinguishable
Week 10th
- Your little embryo has now become a fetus
- Just over 3cm long from head to bottom
- The tissues and organs in your baby’s body will rapidly grow and mature
- Baby is swallowing fluid and kicking up a storm
- Vital organs, including kidneys, intestines, brain and liver, are in place and starting to function
- The outline of baby’s spine is clearly visible through translucent skin
- Spinal nerves are beginning to stretch out from the spinal cord
- Baby’s head measures half the length of her body
- Her forehead temporarily bulges with her developing brain
- Tiny nails forming on fingers and toes
- Peach-fuzz hair beginning to grow on tender skin
- Baby’s limbs can bend now
- Her hands are flexed at the wrist and meet over her heart
- Baby’s feet may be long enough to meet in front of her body
Week 11th
- Just over 4cm long, about the size of a fig
- Baby is now almost fully formed
- Baby’s hands will soon open and close into fists
- Tiny tooth buds are beginning to appear under the gums
- Some of his bones are beginning to harden
- He is already busy kicking and stretching
- You won’t feel the acrobatics for a while yet
Week 12th  
- From crown to rump, your baby is just over 5cm long, about the size of a lime
- She weighs 14g
- Baby’s fingers will soon begin to open and close
- Her mouth will make suckling movements
- Toes will curl, and eye muscles will clench
- Nerve cells are multiplying rapidly
- Synapses, which are used to send messages around the body, are forming furiously in your baby’s brain
- The intestines, which have grown so fast that they protrude into the umbilical cord, will start to move into the abdominal cavity, and the kidneys will begin excreting urine into your baby’s bladder
- Baby’s face looks unquestionably human: her eyes have moved from the sides to the front of her head, and her ears are right where they should be

3.6            At the Doctor’s Office
Your doctor may:
1.     Order an ultrasound to see your baby
2.     Start estimating the size of you baby by your fundal height
3.     Tell you about the alpha-fetoprotein test
4.     Check for the fetal heartbeat
